From Monopoly to Blogpoly

It is just a name. I got the idea to change the name of the board game "Monopoly" to "Blog-log-poly" and then to "Blog-poly".

It is just a game. It is fun to use the board to lay out the Blogosphere Ecosystem. It helps me to think and learn about blogging culture by transforming the original game into this version. I had to think about which company and enterprise to choose and set up first on the board. The space is limited, so I picked well known names in blogging industry. Besides the private properties, there are two public utilities--the water works and the electric company. Then I thought of "Wikipedia" and "Creative Commons", and then a few more, making "criminal" into "spammer", "free parking" into "free hosting". "Chance" and "community chest" become "comment" and "trackback". Fun -- yes? There is not much difference for me transforming the game than writing a poem, using similes, metaphors and symbols.

The board is done.

But the imagination goes on working.

If you do not like to use AIM then choose the Chinese QQ to replace it. If you do not like to use Instant Messenger for a railway station then choose browser to replace it. The number of visitors will become the amount of monopoly money you win. The houses and the hotels will become blogs. Perhaps you would like to create blogging-related messages for a deck of "Comment" cards and make a deck of "Trackback" cards, such as "Being attacked by hackers, you have to stop for 3 turnes." or "Discover a political scandal and get 10000 page views" or " The server is down, lose 30% of your blog property".... more and more, perhaps there will be a "Blogpoly" published by Monopoly one day.

At that time, we could go blogging together and join iN playing this game, which is advertising on acquiring, merger and monopoly.

Actually Blogpoly is nearly the same as the real internet business world. But then in that world we are not players but only count towards the "money" and visitors in the real game.

*Thanks Aaron's cc for telling me that he, Aaron actually made a game called "Blogopoly" 15 months ago. I am sorry and I wish I would known about it earlier. Here is the Aaron's "Blogopoly". I have not commited any plagiarism only getting inspired by Monopoly.
